What to do during Twixmas

The inbetween Christmas and New Year (more commonly known as Twixmas) is always a bit of a strange time. It’s that inbetween state, being in limbo, where we tend to forget which day it is and what we could be doing. If you’re at a lost cause or looking for things to do during Twixmas, why not try some of these ideas below.

During these few days, some people are back to work, some still have family visiting or those to visit. While others are back to just themselves and pondering what to do for those days.

what to do during twixmas

Here’s some ideas for things to do during Twixmas.

Get organised

Agree savings plans / sort out finances / do self assessment

Declutter online passwords/newsletters/email inbox ahead of the new year

Set challenges for the new year – financial, resolutions, physical, or why not take part in some of the sponsored challenges you see floating around social media around this time of year.

Cancel unwanted subscriptions.

Pack up Christmas decorations

Pre-Spring clean

Declutter unwanted toys, games, clothes – try selling on Vinted or Ebay, especially if your local charity shops are swamped straight after the seasonal period.

Do your self assessment if you need to do one (this is usually one of my jobs, but I actually did it before Christmas this year).

Food ideas

Batch cook ready for the new school term and working month.

Get back into healthy eating – set up meal plans for the next month (and do your online food orders with time to spare).

Eat all the Christmas chocolates, biscuits and other unhealthy foods, and finish your Christmas dinner leftovers.

Make use of your leftovers – make butter from cream, stock from your turkey bones/leftovers, freeze other leftovers if suitable, make rocky road or tiffin from chocolates that won’t get eaten.

Create fun new recipes – try alternative versions of hot chocolates, cakes or different ways to use turkey.

Fun things – outdoors and indoors

Visit light trails and displays when it’s quieter (and sometimes they have reduced costs).

Look out for art or sculpture trails. Many of them continue into January, you can see the current (and upcoming) ones in my trail post.

Walk – look for new local trails or visit further afield. Try National Trust places – the houses might be shut but they’re likely to still have the estates open to walk in.

Do a gym trail – find a park with gym equipment in and get in fast with the family before everyone else starts their new year’s resolutions.

Go ice skating (outdoors) before all the venues close down.

Catch up with friends

Join the local library.

Go to the panto

Start fitness challenges early

Journal your Christmas activities – get a nice notebook or scrapbook for children, get stickers/stamp, pens, washi tape, print out some photos and create some nice pages to look back on as a family.

Edit any photos taken (delete all the unwanted ones), back them up (and the past year of photos if not already done), and create an annual photobook or print out selected photos to frame and put on show.

Sales shop – online or in person. Make sure you’re price comparing that they really are good bargains. Use cashback sites/apps where possible. Also look out for theatre ticket sales.

Visit your nearest big city – do museums, view the sights, walk the streets while it’s quiet without all the commuters and usual tourists.

Learn a new skill – jump rope, knitting or crochet, painting.

Spend time training a dog new skills

  1. I love this time of year as it’s always so relaxed but I don’t like not knowing what day it is. Great ideas! We’ve packed up the Christmas decorations and had a good clean and the girls have had a declutter of their bedrooms. We’re working hard on eating all the Christmas treats and we’re hoping to start the healthier eating next week.
Happy new year! Wishing you all the best for 2026! x

    1. I’ll be doing the same with the healthier eating too. We had a good declutter of some areas before Christmas, but I might try and get some more done before work starts back too.
