School days – carol concert, meals out and open morning

With only a week to go until Christmas, it’s noticeable that N’s getting more tired and ready for a break.  A couple of nights this week he’s even fallen asleep on the sofa by around 6.30.  Of course, that’s not helped by the 4.20 wake up one morning, followed by a 5am one the next day.

This week’s been as manic as usual with school.  Thankfully he refused to go to the school disco (as did his best friend) so that saved another event.

Reception mums meal

One for me for once.  The reception mums went out for a meal earlier in the week, all but 3 could make it, so it was lovely to get to meet those I’d not met before and get to know everyone better.  They’re a nice group of ladies, and it was a lovely meal out.  Hopefully it’ll be the first of many.

Added to that, a couple of the mums also said some lovely things about N.  One said that he was a nice little boy.  I’m not sure how she came to that conclusion but I think it was to do with his enthusiasm.  I saw it this morning, that he wants to be the first in the classroom, the first to write on the snack clipboard.  I hope that keenness doesn’t go too quickly.

The other mum said he was good at writing his name, and how much he liked doing it.  I had to admit, that it’s usually under duress, but it seems that making them write their name everytime they take a snack is a good bribe.  It does mean though that this more mum and her child have to wait for N each morning to write his long name with the only pencil that’s around!  When I suggested that maybe N could let the other boy go ahead of him sometimes, he wasn’t having any of it.

Nativity costumes

After my idea to ‘make’ N a tabard style tunic, I reverted to a much easier costume version of an adult sized t shirt instead.  He tried on his costume, and he did look very cute, and quite authentic.  I’ve been lending costumes and Christmassy jumpers out to lots of people so all the events I’m going to be looking out for people wearing our things.

Learning progress

Our school do an online learning journey programme, which means they upload photos and comments about the children’s progress and what they’ve been doing.  Then parents get an update emailed out every couple of months.  I used to love N’s nursery online learning journal, so it’s nice there’s something similar now he’s at school as well.

I’ve not shown it to N yet, but I’m sure he’ll love to read it too.  It is just so reflective of what he’s like.  I can imagine him doing all the points made.

Open morning

Once a term the school has an open morning.  Essentially time at the start of school for parents to come in, have a look at their child’s work, and just find out what’s what.  For me it’s great, just to have a quick 5 minute look (there’s not much in his book yet given how most of his work is practical activities).  It does make me laugh how some children sit with their parents and show them what they’ve done.  Not N.  He’s pretty much oblivious to me being there, apart from to tell me that he was off to get the register from the office.  Then he just grabbed the snack clipboard, wrote his name on it and took a piece of fruit.  A quick kiss goodbye before I went, and that was it.

I love that he’s really independent, but he does still like to say bye (when he notices!).

Carol Concert

This week was N’s first carol concert.  He’d been practising the song his class was singing for a while, although I didn’t hear more than the first 2 lines in advance.  He did ignore us when they all filed into the church, but he did all the actions for their song.  I’m not sure anything was coming out of his voice…he may have just been miming!

It’s lovely to get to a Christingle service.  Hopefully we’ll make it to the church carol concert next week too.  I do love singing Christmas carols.

What’s been going on with your school children this week?

  1. Oh sounds lovely. I was half invited them never told the date or time I guess I didn’t earn my reception mom badge yet. lol Sounds like you were very busy being festive. So lovely. Thank you ever so much for linking up to SWM and the amazing linky/blog support last year. It means the world to me that people come back again and again to share their amazing blogs. I hope this year is no different. It’s great to get to know more blogs and I love reading each post every week and sharing them. I wish you a huge happy new year!!! #sharewithme

    1. Thanks Jenny. It’s a nice linky, and you’re always so welcoming which does help as a host.

Hard as a reception mum when you don’t know anyone. I was lucky that N’s best friend’s mum is a good friend of mine, and I know some of the other mums from nursery, as well as further up the school. But it’s helpful (especially only doing one school pick up) that the PTA have a parent details list so there’s no excuse for people being missed out.

      Happy new year to you

  2. It’s so busy when they start school isn’t it? I like the idea of your meal out with the other parents, what a lovely way to get to know people. When they start performing in concerts it is really sweet but Lucas hardly sang in his…he did however pick his nose throughout most of it!! That’s what I’ll always remember now 🙂

    1. Ha ha. One of the dads was quite put out not to have been invited (he does the school run every morning, and quite often pick ups too). But someone did say, well the dads could organise something too.

  3. The online learning progress update sounds brilliant. We don’t have that so usually have to have quick chats by the door, so it’s a bit hit and miss. We are SO ready for the school holidays too. If it wasn’t for parties this week I think I’d have to bribe Z to go to school.

  4. Ah, that’s lovely. Glad you had a good week and N has settled in well and made friends. The Tubblet, who is at secondary, is absolutely exhausted and we’re counting down until Friday. School is really tiring!

  5. It sounds like you’ve had a lot going on…All fun! I do love this time of year….We have had carol concerts, school plays and this next week my youngest has her class party and then finish on Thursday! I can’t wait x

    1. Nice to finish on Thursday. We’re Friday. The play’s on Tuesday, but this week they’ve Xmas jumper day and Xmas dinner/party wear. It’s definitely more exciting than my time at primary school.
